Consultation Session for Head and Neck Tumor Patients
Head:
Dr. med. Philippe Schafhausen
Physician Team:
Dr. med. Lara Bußmann (ENT Department),
Dr. med. Marcus Hezel (ENT Department)
Our head and neck tumor consultation team for outpatients is specialized in drug therapy of tumors originating from the head and neck area.
These include tumors originating from the:
- Oral cavity
- Base of the Tongue
- Throat
- Tonsils
- Larynx
- Nasal cavity
- Paranasal sinus and ethmoidal sinus
- Thyroid.
An example of when cancer drug therapy (syn. systemic tumor therapy) is used is when surgical removal of a tumor is no longer possible due to its extensive progression or when functional impairment would result. Thereby, a locally advanced tumor would be treated using the individual combination of drug- and radiation therapy.
In patients with metastatic disease such as metastasized thyroid cancer, a combination chemotherapy in conjunction with a targeted antibody therapy or a targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy is used.
Our multidisciplinary team ensures a close and interdisciplinary cooperation with the Departments of Radiation Therapy and ENT, the Clinic for Oral/maxillo-facial Surgery as well as the Department of General, Visceral, and Thoracic Surgery.
All treatment steps such as the initiation of a systemic therapy or changes in treatment plan are discussed in interdisciplinary tumor conferences to ensure the best possible care for the individual patient and guarantee the optimal sequence of therapeutic measures.
In addition there is a wide range of clinical trials with innovative medications, some of which may not even be available yet.
