The Institute of Neuropathology
The Institute of Neuropathology is part of the
Diagnostics Center
and deals with the diagnosis of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system and the muscles. We also do research on the fundamental mechanisms of neurodegeneration and the pathogenesis of brain tumours.
Our Institute is accredited as an inspection center according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020.
Primary Fields of Interest
The
diagnostic spectrum
of the Institute of Neuropathology covers the entire field of neuropathology including brain biopsies , muscle/ nerve biopsies , CSF diagnostics,
forensic neuropathology
and molecular neuropathology. Our team of experienced neuropathologists, biologists and technicians guarantees highest diagnostic quality according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020.

Research
With our research, we gain novel insights into the mechanisms of neurological diseases. Neuropathology is at the hinge between basic and clinical neurosciences and our research combines molecular and cellular biology with disease models and human tissue specimens in a truly “translational” approach.
We focus on
Prion-associated neurodegeneration
Presenilin and Alzheimers disease
The role of neuroserpin in the brain
Translational neurooncology
Prof. Dr. med. Christian Hagel
Forensic neuropathology
Experimental morphology
Developmental neurobiology and pediatric neurooncology
Teaching and Continuing Education
The Institute of Neuropathology teaches medical studies following the interdisciplinary Imed curriculum https://www.uke.de/english/studies-teaching/index.html In addition, we offer laboratory courses in molecular biological and histological methods. As part of the quality circle of the North German neuropathology Institutes, the Institute of Neuropathology organizes case discussions and ring trials.
