Secondary use of medical data is becoming increasingly popular for research purposes. More and more university medical centers are providing access to their clinical routine data, trying to balance benefits of medical research progress with the need to protect subjects`privacy. In this realm, we introduceed the data hotel in October 2022 to provide the researchers from the UKE with a data-secure, easy-to-handle platform opening up a large amount of clinically gathered data and allowing them to obtain data-backed research hypotheses and answer retrospective research questions without the necessity of organizational aspects: such as a project-specific ethical committee, a data protection impact assessment (DSFA), a distinct study protocol and declaration of consents. The legal basis to obtain the data is the nationally unique federal law §12 HmbKHG (Hamburgisches Krankenhausgesetz), an opt-out law requiring pseudonymizing all utilized data for research purposes. In our talk, we will give a detailled description on the data hotel, its structure, potential, and current challenges.
